In the first part of this guide, I have shared about my personal experience and my personal learning curve, when I were to choose a web hosting service provider to host my website.
IX Web Hosting was initially my first option, simply and solely because of the cheap price that they were offering, together with the free advertising ads of Google, Yahoo and MSN that were being bundled into their packages.
*Note : I went to IX Web Hosting to check again for the free-ads offer, few weeks ago. To my surprise, they have taken off the Microsoft adCenter free ads offer.
I had explained on why I have changed my mind, and chose to be hosted with DowntownHost.com, in my previous post.
If you have not yet read about it, and would like to do so, please checkout my previous post, titled as ‘Guideline For Newbie To Choose A Better Web Hosting Service-Part 1’.
As you are now reading this post, for whatever reason it is, I am pretty sure that it has to be a web-hosting-related stuff.
I am going to assume that you are a pure newbie (or perhaps if you know only little bit about web hosting like I am), having zero knowledge (or a little bit of knowledge like I was before this) on how to use a web hosting service, you have no idea on what is the possible problems that will occur in the web hosting industry, you wonder what kind of hosting service suit you the most, and so many other questions that you might be wondering.
First and foremost, I need to remind you that, I am just like you, maybe less savvy than you, and I am a non-technical person, when it comes to the internet stuff.
But what I am able to do is, I have collected some of the most basic information that you might need, before you start to shop for any web hosting services.
You can use the service to host your website for almost all of the subjects that you can think of, and it can be hosted on different kind of web hosting providers.
It can be used for the purpose of gaming server, portal website, video sharing, file sharing, photo sharing, text-based information, e-commerce, internet marketing, weblog (blogging website), forum (bbs), business, personal, social…
The list can go on, but what I am trying to illustrate in here, is actually the limitation on the hosting services’ plans on some of the examples which were being listed on the list above.
Of course, I am not going to explain all of them in here (obviously, I don’t have enough knowledge to comment on some of them).
There are 2 most basic platforms which are being used in most of the hosting plan, the Linux hosting plan, and the Windows hosting plan.
When you are trying to use any technology such as the ASP.NET on your website, you would then be required to use the Windows hosting plan, as the particular technology would not be able to work in the Linux hosting plan.
There are several basic plans, which are the most basic and most commonly advertised plans.
For example, the shared hosting plan, semi-dedicated hosting plan, dedicated hosting plan, etcetera.
Next, what you would have to consider about, is the nature of your website.
I will be using 5 web hosting companies as the example on 4 different kinds of nature of the websites that you are probably going to develop, and to be hosted with any of those web hosting companies on the internet.
Each of these web hosting companies has its own advantages and disadvantages, but you can still take them as references, and choose a better web hosting service provider for yourself.
Featured web hosting company :-
- Rackspace
- DowntownHost
- Exabytes
- SBI!
- IX Web Hosting
* Note : I am not going to give very detailed information on this post about the 5 web hosting companies which were being recommended above, or else this post will be a very long post. I will perhaps make a disambiguation on each one of them (or maybe not), when I have the time to do so.
Scenario 1 : Dedicated servers - For example , running a very busy forum OR Game Server.
Rackspace
If you are planning to be a web hosting provider, or if you are planning to run a very busy forum/game server, you would most probably need a dedicated server. Rackspace is a web hosting company which is good in this kind of service, and they are famous for their quality support which was being provided to their customers. Visit the website of Rackspace, or visit their customer review area. You can also search for comments or reviews about Rackspace, in the Web Hosting Talk forum.
Scenario 2 : Shared hosting plan - For example , running a normal/personal website, which is not using a high level of processing power (CPU & RAM).
DowntownHost & Exabytes
If you are going run a normal website or a blog site or a small business site which only requires a small or minimum usage of processing power (CPU & RAM), you can actually go for the shared hosting plan. If you are a Malaysian resident, you can opt for Exabytes, a popular Malaysian web hosting company. If there is emergency, at least it won’t cost you as high as calling to an overseas number. Or else, you can choose to be hosted with DowntownHost, a U.S. based web hosting company. I have explained that I need to search for a web hosting company which has a very good support team, and I did try out with Exabytes & DowntownHost’s support team. Personally, I do like DowntownHost’s support service over the other one. Not to say that the support system of Exabytes is not efficient, but I really do prefer to be backed by DowntownHost. I have not yet experienced a slow reply on any of my requests / inquiries. Fastest = Within 2 minutes, slowest = not more than 1 hour. I have been trying that on the daytime, and on the nighttime, at my local time.
Scenario 3 : All-In-One special hosting package - For example , running an e-commerce website, a website optimized for monetization, or any kind of website, where monetization will be the main issue to be considered.
Site Build It! (SBI!)
If you are serious about having your own online business (if you are a complete newbie, OR if you don’t know the concept of online business, OR if you don’t know how exactly you can generate money from the internet), this is probably the most suitable place you should be visiting, among those other web hosting companies that I have recommended above. Site Build It! (SBI!) is being known as All-In-One hosting package, because of the services that SBI! is offering. It is offering most of those services which are needed to be running an online business (successfully), and the price is ten fold lower or more, comparing to the services which has the same quality, same features given. As their company’s favorite quote is ‘Content Is King’, you should have understood by now, that they are mostly urging people to optimize their website with more quality and unique content, to maximize the monetization opportunity. I would most probably be giving out a more detailed disambiguation on this category (SBI!), in my future blog post. I will definitely let them host most of my future website, in the coming days. I will explain why, in my future blog post.
Scenario 4 : Super-cheap hosting package - For example , running the same website as described in scenario 2, and wouldn’t expect a very good support system from most of those super-cheap web hosting companies.
IX Web Hosting
If you are trying to search for a super-cheap web hosting service, and you are not going to worry about whether or not they are having a good supporting team, then IX Web Hosting would probably be one of those super-cheap web hosting companies you could pay a visit to.
Another important thing that everyone should take into consideration, is to backup your own data from your web hosting account (this is of course, after you had bought your web hosting service), in a timely manner.
Although web hosting company does mention that it will do a backup for you, either by a nightly, weekly or some other choices, it is everyone’s responsible to back up their own data, in case anything happens.
If you do not know how to backup your data, ask your web hosting service provider (after you had bought it), they should assist you on that.
If they are slacking off or refuse to help you on that, you will then get to know what I meant by a ‘not-so-good support team’.
During the process of searching for an alternative web hosting provider, I have learnt a lot from some other webmasters.
For example, some of those information were about :-
- How to choose a web hosting service provider by category.
- How to identify a hosting provider with greater customer support.
- How to identify a cheap hosting service provider with a better support system within the same class/category, i.e. within the cheap hosting class or within the supercheap class, etc.
There are a lot of websites out there in the internet world, where some of them are giving so much of good information, whereas some of them are trying to be a “web hosting reviewer”, and taking some advantage on that, to promote their own affiliate web hosting sites.
I know that there is no way that I can collect all of the information related to web hosting services on the earth, and provide all of them to you in this post.
However, what I can do is, at least to try to share the most basic knowledge that one should get to know, before choosing to be hosted with any of the web hosting service provider from the super-saturated web hosting industry.
Avoid the cheap-cheaper-cheapest kind of mindset, choose the one which suits your needs, not to be influenced by or to be seduced by the cheap price + various kind of ‘ridiculous’ offers which was being promoted by any of those web hosting service provider out there.
Example of the ‘ridiculous’ offers (more commonly known as overselling hosting), please visit the article about the overselling hosting, which was being composed by Daniel Lemnaru, the webmaster of Web Hosting Reviews.
Some of those websites that I think any average newbie (who is at the first time to choose a suitable web hosting service) should visit :-
1) Web Hosting Reviews – A web hosting guide that considers reviews the basis in all hosting related decisions. Provides a list of what it calls Honest Hosts.
- Note : Having a lot of information which is in a text-based-information basis on the website. If you are trying to understand what on earth those ‘web hosting insider information’ are about, this is where you are going to get most of the information needed. Checkout the ‘Articles’ area, on the left hand side of the website.
2) Ultracheaphosts.com – A web hosting guide that share the same author/host with Web Hosting Reviews, Daniel Lemnaru.
- Note : If you were to choose a supercheap web hosting like I did before this, this is a MUST READ website. Daniel Lemnaru, the author had contributed a lot of information for a web hosting dummy like me. You will be shocked to know the truth about how the ‘Ultracheap hosts’ work. In another words, why are they so cheap?
3) HostReview.com – Having a lot of information on web hosting service providers. It is more to a commercialized web-hosting-review website.
4) WebHostingJury.com – Having a huge database of web hosting service providers. It is more to a typical web-hosting-review website, where people can vote for various categories of the service which was being provided by their hosting provider. Visitors can input comments and there are quite many posts of comments in their website, where you can take them as your own reference.
5) WebHosting.info – Having a huge database of web hosting service providers and registrars, providing graphical & chart review along with the market shares of each hosting company, which make it slightly different from other web-hosting-review website. It is a place which is not bad to check for the popularity of a web hosting service provider, either by country-based, or by worldwide-based.
6) WebHostingTalk.com – Last but not least, this is a web-hosting-about forum that you can visit, to check about the possible problem that a web hosting company is having, or to check on how did customers respond to a particular web hosting company’s service.
- Note : Please be warned that there are always pros and cons in anything. Things like owner/staff of a web hosting company might be giving a good review (could be a fake one) on their own company, opponent/competitor of a web hosting company might purposely try to create chaos or problem onto its rival’s company. To understand more about the correct way to search or to ask questions in an open forum or a public forum, please check out this article, which is about the hosts search strategy.
